Golden Plains thoughts and musing

March 13, 2012

Golden plains a review (all pics from Mess and Noise website)

Last weekend I joined 8000 other punters in a paddock in between Geelong and Ballarat in Victoria Australia to attend the golden plains music festival.

It would have to be one of the best music festivals in the world. I do not say this lightly or with our reference. This festival is a result of the combined knowledge gained from running 30 similar events over the last 20 odd years. The guys that run it know what we want (good music and good times) and how to make it happen (low queue time, great food, great toilets, shaded areas, chill out areas, etc etc). They also without out question provide some of the most interesting act choices and have a wide diversity of sounds throughout the 2 days.

Anyway my highlights were

  1. Niles Rodgers and Chic – 70’s funk never sounded so good. This guy brought the party, brought his amazing back catalogue and bought the fun. Perfect scheduling and perfect performance. Everyone I could see went nuts to Bowie, INXS and Sugar hill gang. So much fun.
  2. Endless Boogie, my boot band. Dirty rock groves sound amazing in the super natural amphitheatre and these guys do it so well. The lead singer looks like he has had some hard days (and even harder nights) but his hair is still perfect.
  3. Wild Flag. “Im a race horse, yeah Im a race hourse, put your money on me”
  4. I also liked Roky Ericson, Total Control, Charles Bradley (see below for him live at the show), Bonnie Prince, Black lips, First aid kit, lannie lane, Bon Iver and a few more. They all had some great moments. Even Kistroyer had a the crowd in their hands for a fleeting moment (before taking themselves way too seriously)
  5. The crowd and atmosphere. This is the real winner of GP. There is so much fun happening and everyone is in such a helpfully fun mood that any problems seem to be meaningless. The one stage, BYO policy and low people numbers have something to do with this.
  6. Catching up with all those Meredith/GP friends

Anyway The podcast has loads of the great songs from the weekend and some more thoughts. Enjoy
