Just on Spec 18th Jan 2011- The Eastern and a country hoedown battle royal

January 17, 2011

It is good to see some honky tonk country tunes being belted out here in the top of the south. The Eastern played last Friday at the Boat House here in Nelson. The very hard working front man, Adam McGrath, worked over the crowd while the more stage shy band plucked as variety of banjos, violins, double basses and guitars. Adam worked a little too hard ending the night prematurely with two broken guitars and a rollicking “everyone on the dance floor” sing along. The Eastern hails for CHCH (and surrounds, Littleton to be more precise) have toured through the top of the south few times. If you like Old Crow Medicine Show, Avett Bros, Justin Towns Earle, Felice Brothers, Gillian Welsh etc go check these guys out. More information can be found here.

We here at Just on Spec are happy to report that I heard a rumour that Gillian will be putting her beautiful voice to a new album soon, a follow up to the amazing 2003 release Soul Journey, we await with baited breath.

Neko case is giving away her beloved classic 1967 Mercury Cougar to one lucky winner to benefit 826 National This is one amazing car…..but when I watch the clip I flick back to the Simpson episode from a car show where the scantily clad model is berated with “Do you come with the car?”

So after a few beers on Friday I was challenged to a country hoedown battle for tonight’s shows. Rules are pretty simple, pack as much honky tonk music you can fit into  a green recycling bag and bring it to the studio for an hour and a half of toe tappin’, jug blowin’, tail wagin’ fun. So strap yourself to the fake leather recliner, call your pooch to your side and pour yourself a very tasty beverage.
